Bucharest Rising is a timelapse film, set in the bustling capital city of Romania, created by Mihai Doarna.
The goal of this project is to promote city’s attractions and to show its diversity and its recent development.
In the period between the two World Wars, the city’s elegant architecture earned Bucharest the nickname of “Little Paris”. Unfortunately many buildings from the historical center were destroyed by 1977 earthquake and Ceausescu’s program of systematization.
In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom and today, Bucharest is an interesting mix of neoclassical, communist era and modern architectures.
The locations that appear in this film are concentrated in the center, old town and the northern part of the city.
You can see beautiful parks (Cismigiu, Herastrau and Carol), communist era buildings (Parliament Palace and the House of Free Press), historic buildings (the Romanian Atheneum, CEC Palace) and modern structures (Basarab Overpass, City Gate, Sky Tower).
Technical data about the movie and the gear used
Almost 15,000 photos were captured in raw format and post-processed to retain all the tones in the image.
The camera used for this project was a Nikon D7200 paired with a Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 and a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. Polarizers, gradual NDs, variable NDs and fixed NDs filters (up to ND1000) were used to increase the exposure time and to handle high contrast scenes.

Mihai Doarna lives in Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. He is a Java Developer and also an avid photographer, and a mounteneer.
His passion for photography started in 2008 with him being attracted to the technical side of digital cameras.
My primary interest is landscape and travel photography. I am an addicted mountaineer and I love to explore remote places always trying to tell a visual story. It didn’t take a long time for me to discover that traveling, hiking and photography make me happy.
